The Grade 1 Oran Mor Pipe Band of Albany, NY has found new direction for their drum corps with the appointment of Michael Eagle as Drum Sergeant and Lead Drummer.
Eagle, a professional percussionist from New York City, has secondary degrees in Music Performance, Education, and Composition as well as a Master’s Degree in Music Performance. He has played with the Grade 2 Niagara Police, Grade 1 City of Washington, and most recently played with New York Metro for their Grade 3B World Championship. He has performed as a snare drummer and designed percussion for the Grade I Bagad Beuzeg from Brittany, France; Eagle’s participation including included their Grade II World Championship in 2011. Outside of the circle, he is the leader and designer of The Ruff Drags fusion drum corps.
“I have always loved Scottish bagpipe band music and have devoted a large part of my career to learning and promoting the art form in the United States,” stated Eagle. “It’s difficult to express how humbled and honored I am for this opportunity to both represent and progress Scottish music in the US as a member one of its best bands. I believe that Pipe Major Andrew Douglas and I have begun a working relationship that will lead to even better music and a stronger, more competitive organization.”
“Michael and I developed a strong musical relationship immediately after meeting each other,” stated PM Andrew Douglas. “His sensitivity to the nuances essential to the bagpiping idiom is inspiring and exactly what Oran Mor needs to reach the next level. It is very clear to me that the future of our corps will thrive under his leadership, and I expect to see the best Oran Mor yet at the World Championships come August.”
Eagle was appointed to the band on November 11, 2012. In his short term as leading drummer, he has secured relationships between Oran Mor and several high-profile percussion companies. As of 2013, the Oran Mor Pipe Band will be an official performing artist group for Pearl Corp. USA, Evans Drumheads, and OffWorld Percussion. Oran Mor’s 2013 drum corps will consist of several past members in addition to many of Eagle’s drumming colleagues from the US, Canada, and France.
Along with the addition of Eagle, Oran Mor plans to update the band’s image and online presence. “Until Michael’s introduction to the Oran Mor team, we have struggled to develop a cohesive and consistent identity for the band,” said Douglas. “Now, with his connections, experience and influence, we will be able to focus more and more on performing and developing our own unique voice in the vast world of music.”
