Pipers, Drummers, and Drum Majors: Join us April 5 – 7 in Saratoga Springs, NY for our sixth annual Spring Training Workshop!
As always, Oran Mor will be hosting educational events in 2013 that aim to help our piping community develop and continue to thrive!
Sixth Anniversary! Spring Training
Oran Mor’s Spring Training Workshop is scheduled for Friday evening, April 5th through Sunday afternoon, April 7th in downtown Saratoga Springs, NY. The three-day workshop covers various piping and drumming topics: Learn the basics or advanced intricacies of piping and drumming, the art of putting together a great sounding pipe band, work one-on-one with a band member, and, of course, have tons of fun! Also, don’t forget to experience some of Oran Mor’s traditional and less traditional music at our Saturday night Ceilidh!
Details and pricing will be forthcoming at http://oranmorpipeband.com
New! Spring E-Training
Throughout the months of April, May, and June, Oran Mor will host a series online classes that you can attend from anywhere in the world and from the comfort of home! Oran Mor members will continue to develop what was taught at the Spring Training workshop held in Saratoga Springs, and also introduce new topics along the way. This ground-breaking educational series will be brought to you thanks to a sponsorship by Dojo University, the world’s first online piping school.
Details and pricing for these classes will be forthcoming at http://oranmorpipeband.com
New! Pipe Band Master Class Workshop
At this all-new workshop, bands will have a chance to work one-on-one with Oran Mor instructors for several hours in the morning, then take what they’ve learned and perform for the other bands in the afternoon. We’ll then offer feedback on the performance, including score sheets – just like a real competition! Dates and location are still being determined, but we’re looking into late-June or early-July. If you have a suggestion, email stephanie@
Date, details, and pricing will be forthcoming at http://oranmorpipeband.com
Cancelled: Indoor Contests
In order to focus our efforts on providing you with the best educational opportunities during the 2013 season, we have decided to cancel the Oran Mor Indoor Solo Contests originally scheduled for January 5th and February 23rd. We apologize to those who were looking forward to the contest, but we hope you’ll join us for one (or all!) of our exciting workshops in 2013. Our current plan is to reinstate these indoor contests in the winter of 2014, so stay tuned!
The Grade 1 Oran Mor Pipe Band of Albany, NY has found new direction for their drum corps with the appointment of Michael Eagle as Drum Sergeant and Lead Drummer.
Eagle, a professional percussionist from New York City, has secondary degrees in Music Performance, Education, and Composition as well as a Master’s Degree in Music Performance. He has played with the Grade 2 Niagara Police, Grade 1 City of Washington, and most recently played with New York Metro for their Grade 3B World Championship. He has performed as a snare drummer and designed percussion for the Grade I Bagad Beuzeg from Brittany, France; Eagle’s participation including included their Grade II World Championship in 2011. Outside of the circle, he is the leader and designer of The Ruff Drags fusion drum corps.
“I have always loved Scottish bagpipe band music and have devoted a large part of my career to learning and promoting the art form in the United States,” stated Eagle. “It’s difficult to express how humbled and honored I am for this opportunity to both represent and progress Scottish music in the US as a member one of its best bands. I believe that Pipe Major Andrew Douglas and I have begun a working relationship that will lead to even better music and a stronger, more competitive organization.”
“Michael and I developed a strong musical relationship immediately after meeting each other,” stated PM Andrew Douglas. “His sensitivity to the nuances essential to the bagpiping idiom is inspiring and exactly what Oran Mor needs to reach the next level. It is very clear to me that the future of our corps will thrive under his leadership, and I expect to see the best Oran Mor yet at the World Championships come August.”
Eagle was appointed to the band on November 11, 2012. In his short term as leading drummer, he has secured relationships between Oran Mor and several high-profile percussion companies. As of 2013, the Oran Mor Pipe Band will be an official performing artist group for Pearl Corp. USA, Evans Drumheads, and OffWorld Percussion. Oran Mor’s 2013 drum corps will consist of several past members in addition to many of Eagle’s drumming colleagues from the US, Canada, and France.
Along with the addition of Eagle, Oran Mor plans to update the band’s image and online presence. “Until Michael’s introduction to the Oran Mor team, we have struggled to develop a cohesive and consistent identity for the band,” said Douglas. “Now, with his connections, experience and influence, we will be able to focus more and more on performing and developing our own unique voice in the vast world of music.”
